Spill Your Lungs I would walk with a hand at your back And you would walk with your hand in my back pocket I would joke that you would steal my wallet And you would laugh and you’d say, no I wouldn’t We could spend our hearts all over this town for nothing We could spend our hearts all over this town for nothing We would stop for a drink later After we were tired of moving And you would know someone in the tavern Who could maybe tell us of this coming winter We could spill our wine all over this town for nothing We could spill our wine all over this town for nothing After we thought that it had become quite easy I would make a joke that was not funny But sincerely quite offensive From a time when I was reckless We could scream our lungs out in this town for nothing We could scream our lungs out in this town for nothing Maybe I should have set my goals much further Than like the Northern Star’s wish to burn for just one night Maybe I should have mentioned That I was not built for this kind of loving We’re going to chase each other around this town for nothing We’re going to chase each other around this town for nothing

Book of Love 03:41
Book of Love So you’re reading the Book of Love And your favourite pages They are marked by the spots that you like I make mistakes sometimes I often don’t get it right I make mistakes sometimes I often don’t get it right In talking we get along just fine But in walking I’m always four or five steps behind I can’t keep up With what’s moving on your mind I make mistakes sometimes I often don’t get it right So you’re reading the Book of Love And your favourite pages They are marked by the spots that you like I make mistakes sometimes I often don’t get it right I make mistakes sometimes I often don’t get it right

BOAT! 02:32
BOAT! I am sitting and I am writing to you Thumbing through old photos of myself Deciding which one I’m going to send home to you Because I do not have a telephone to call If this was some kind of dream Then it is one that I could keep together And right now I am waiting for you to come in So I can remember the softness of your skin I love you in the snow in the wilderness And I love you in the snow wherever you are But mostly I love you when you’re in the snow that’s in my arms Because that’s where I always am

Bike Thief 03:59
Bike Thief I met all my friends again last night in a bar Northland Gin It tastes like conversation And it comes up again You locked our bikes together I thought it was a good idea It lasted all night friend We locked ourselves together in a certain way You help me out and I will help you out We’re lucky it’s a simple combination Last call for conversation The lights are on And we are sinking way down in our chairs We don’t say much of anything Even though there’s still a lot to say The lights are on And maybe we should just ride home

Blue 03:41
Blue I decided long ago Never to laugh again I decided long ago Never to cry again I made my list I’ve thrown them all in Made my list I’ve thrown them all in Never to laugh again Never to love again So I’m blue So I’m blue So I’m blue So I’m blue

Sweetest May 02:42
Sweetest May Sweetest May it is not your luck If terrible things are happening to your friends Hold out kid because you’ve got it right You can read the statements Burned into the leather and saved from the cutter I could see this coming While they were waiting guessing And you were outside waiting So I took too long to decide to go that night It’s too cold to walk There’s no cabs on this block I’m uptown ready to fun There’s two maps to see This is some tourist dream But a bit too close to the lake Sweetest May it is not your luck Hold out kid because this has nothing to do with your faults

Switch the Engineer All the lights are off and no one is home Leave a note that says that we stopped by Just to talk for a while I miss those old days sometimes How long has it been since we’ve been friendly Longer than a sin should go on living All because I was not happy Just because I thought that I was too busy Messenger of news where are you coming from Should I let myself give in and trust you And reverse my built in sadness A crazy horse that’s impossible to harness We should get ourselves out of these shadows Switch the engineer whom darkness follows Relax and enjoy the weather Just get old experiencing our time
8.
This Place 01:17
This Place This place is a very good place to be And I’m starting to know it well I’m trying to see the whole world as just one friend And open up to influence What’s slow is slow What’s fast is fast What’s right may be right What’s wrong may be wrong Who says it’s wrong

SPOOKY ACTION AT A DISTANCE is the third release from the reclusive and respected artist, Frederick Squire. Celebrated for his ability to achieve unthinkable results using ramshackle recording equipment, Squire maintains the ability to make the listener feel as though they are taking part in the recording experience, a sentiment that takes a beautiful shape and lingers, reverberating, long after. Performed, recorded, and mixed by Squire himself, and mastered by the revered John Golden (Sonic Youth, Lee Hazelwood), the final product sounds so incredible, it is hard to imagine that it was recorded in a tiny basement while Squire was also pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering and learning to be a father. Most of the songs were written over ten years ago when Squire was living in Dawson City, Yukon. These older songs such as, “Spill Your Lungs” and “Bike Thief”, contemplate the ups and downs of a young man in and out of love. The record concludes with Squire’s most recent offerings, “Switch the Engineer” and “This Place”, which reflect his current state of matrimonial harmony. While the subject material of his songs may be taken from simple every day life, Squire is a master craftsman when it comes to his sharp and poetic word choice. After the record is released, Squire will power down the studio and switch his focus toward the future of robotics, gathering new experiences about the world we live in through scientific discovery, all the while slowly and carefully deciding what to write about next. In the meantime, fans can appreciate this collection of songs by a dedicated recording artist who works tirelessly at making art out of everything.
